چکیده

Epidemiological studies indicate that the origins of high blood pressure initiates in fetal life. Recent reviews highlight a role for numerous factors in the pathogenesis of the developmental programming of hypertension including epigenetic processes, glucocorticoids, reduced nephron number, activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) and endothelial dysfunction. Studies published in Hypertension and other journals highlight the complexity of cardiovascular risk that has its origins in fetal life. The purpose of this minireview is to present an update on recent studies in Hypertension that investigate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the developmental programming of hypertension and increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Garlic Supplement Improves Intestinal Mucosa Morphology in Broiler Chickens with Developmental Pulmonary Hypertension

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary garlic on the growth performance, intestinal mucosa morphology, and pulmonary hypertensive response in broiler chickens with pulmonary hypertension induced by 3, 5, 3′-l triiodothyronine. Chicks were reared for 42 days and treated with triiodothyronine (1.5 mg/kg diet) and 0 (control), 0.2, 0.6 or 1% garlic powder. Intestinal segme...

Reprogramming: A Preventive Strategy in Hypertension Focusing on the Kidney

Adulthood hypertension can be programmed in response to a suboptimal environment in early life. However, developmental plasticity also implies that one can prevent hypertension in adult life by administrating appropriate compounds during early development. We have termed this reprogramming. While the risk of hypertension has been assessed in many mother-child cohorts of human developmental prog...

Developmental Programming of Hypertension and Kidney Disease

A growing body of evidence supports the concept that changes in the intrauterine milieu during "sensitive" periods of embryonic development or in infant diet after birth affect the developing individual, resulting in general health alterations later in life. This phenomenon is referred to as "developmental programming" or "developmental origins of health and disease." The risk of developing lat...

Dietary Proteins, Developmental Programming, and Potential Implication in Maternal Obesity

Background: Proteins are known mainly based on their metabolic and nutritional functions including protein synthesis and a source of energy. In spite of various physiological properties attributed to proteins, their functions have neither been addressed by assessing quality of proteins nor by nutrition and dietetic practices. Methods: Studies were included if they were randomized animal studies...

Supplemental L-arginine Modulates Developmental Pulmonary Hypertension in Broiler Chickens Fed Reduced-Protein Diets and Reared at High Altitude

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplemental L-arginine (ARG) in reduced-protein diets on cardiopulmonary performance and intestinal morphology in the broilers reared at high altitude. A total of 156 day-old male broilers were randomly assigned to 3 treatments and 4 replicates of 13 chicks and reared up to 42 days of age. Treatment groups were designed as a normal-prote...
